Working with Resin

2 day Resins course - £150 to include materials

Saturday/Sunday 17th & 18th October, 2015 - 10am to 4.30 pm

We are delighted to welcome back Clare John to Touchmark Studios. Clare is an experienced jeweller and tutor in Resins, sometimes known as cold enamels and she has been using resin in her silver jewellery for over 30 years. She teaches at a number of venues around the country, including the prestigious Birmingham School of Jewellery

This 2 day workshop will give jewellery makers the opportunity to use resin in different ways. It is suitable for complete beginners or those who have worked with Resin and wish to expand their skills. The resins you will be working with are odour free and therefore much safer to use than traditional resins. During the course there will be time to discuss using resin with metal clay and traditional jewellery.  Finishing techniques and problem solving will also be covered.

There will also be an opportunity to buy materials from the tutor at the end of the class.

Course Outline:

Resin in Cloisonné Jewellery  - Resin starts as a liquid and it is difficult to stop colours blending into each other without a barrier. Clare will show you her version of Cloisonné, an ancient jewellery technique, using resin instead of traditional glass enamel and will also cover how to set resin without a backing, fake Plique-à-jour (French for "letting in daylight").  You will find out how to create wire enclosures (known as cloisons) and colour the different sections with transparent, sparkle and metallic resins.

Resin in Mosaic Jewellery - Resin is incredibly versatile and can be used to mimic an age old mosaic effect. Clare John will show you how to create mosaic elements in resin jewellery to produce rich and subtle pieces. You will be using scrap ceramic and resin shards. If you have any items you would like to try, please bring them with you and Clare will see if they are suitable for the projects for example, fabric, beads, ceramic.
